Internship Reflection - 759 Words

Looking back over the past eight weeks interning with the Vanderbilt University Development and Alumni Relations team, I know that I have changed from my first time walking into the LOEWS building. From first hearing about this internship and applying to finishing two months of projects and informal interviews, I learned so much about the world of Advancement and Development. Not only has a new professional path has opened up for me, I have had a chance to flex a few skills that had not been used since my recruitment and business undergrad days that felt very comfortable and enjoyable. My time with the Stewardship Team in DAR has been both enlightening and encouraging towards a future in Advancement. This was Vanderbilt’s second year†¦show more content†¦No matter the level of the person I met with, they were always interested to hear about my experience, share their experience and work, and then provide me with relevant feedback on how I could make it at Vanderbil t and Advancement in general. They were truly the building blocks of this educational internship, providing me with such great information and dispelling a lot of my misconceived notions of what it meant to do Development work and fundraise. Even though I was not working in their departments, a few of the people I met invited me to events that let me see them doing their work, such as donor events and University wide meetings. Not only did I learn about DAR and the people I DAR, I now feel like I have a better grasp on other schools and areas of Vanderbilt University as a whole. On the CASE side of things, I wish things had gone as smoothly as with the Vanderbilt side. There were a few bumps on the road and many hurdles to be jumped, but I appreciated some of the effort. The weekly exercises helped me focus some of my questions with my expert guess each week at Vanderbilt and the Washington, DC conference with the other AIP interns was a real delight, especially getting to hear from Princess Gamble of the National African American History and Culture Museum. Specific Example from my experience to illustrate the factors of success In order to complete the project successfully, several factor come across. Such as Involvement of right people This was the key success factors of the project. The selected people in the assignment 1 was right because thinking process and meeting criteria of the project was same both of us. We share same goals and have enough resources such as skills, knowledge, etc and the capabilities. Part from that we have the credibility in community. Most important factor was that trusting of relationship. Communication Levin (2010) argued that mechanism of effective communication is the key of achieving success in collaborative work. On the other hand, Hunt (2009) opined that electronic communication such as phone, fax, web, video calling, text messaging, social media, email, etc is the effective method of communication in these days. However, in order to successful completion of assignment work, both of us used electronic communication media. Apart from that, we think during undertaken of the project that electronic communication is not enough to build project or improve success. Therefore, we as a member of the project meet regularly for face to face communication. Thus a larger portion of critical part we covered easily. Respect Respect builds the successful collaboration (Elliott, 2013). We have effective respect skills and this provides lot of advantage in order to complete this project. I was fully involved with the project and make continuous collaboration with teammate and project guider. Following are the factors that contributed by me in terms of achieving the level of success during project Project Scheduling In order to achieve massive success in a project, scheduling or planning is the key term. Scheduling can helps in developing and achieving progression of the project. I negotiate the project approval from project management. Decision making Making of decision is the process of generating ultimate success for every project (Lekovicm 2012). For this project, I made the decision of combining both ideas of Soccer and Cricket into one assignment. Communication Make continuous interaction with my team mate and project guider as well as informed about the decisions, changes, issues, solutions, information that undertake, etc. Influencing I was making sure to my team mate about the related information that collected from various sources such as internet, books, journals, articles, etc. Apart from that, herding cats was appropriate for this project (Bush, 2013). Negotiation I interacted directly to the line manager of project and informed about the resources of this project. This negotiation helps to amendment the plan of this project. 3. Use the literature (external readings) to discuss and explain your experiences, your own role and the success of your group Theory related to group development: five stage model of group develop is the appropriate as well as relevant theory for this project. Forming is the first stage that helps in characterizing uncertainty about purpose, leadership, structure of group. It helps in identifying the acceptable behaviour in project from members (Foldy and Buckley, 2009). Storming is considered as intra group conflict. It helps in imposing the group individually. Norming helps in making close relationship with the partnership and demonstrates the cohesiveness of group. Performing helps in making structure according to functions of project. Group energy has moved toward success via performing. Adjourning helps in making effective bonding and linking with the partners or team member. Thus, it typically increased the sense of commitment and support. Team roles of Belbin are also an essential part of building effective team work. According to the Williams et al. (2012), theory and related aspect of Belbin model ensures the leader of team in developing proper structure and make capability of attaining future goals and objectives. Belbin theory allows the leader of team in playing the role of monitor and decision making for attaining success of the ongoing project. Apart from that, related theory of Belbin model allows in playing the role according to action oriented. Belbin theory allows the team leader for accepting the challenges and also has the ability to overcome that challenges. 4. Strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of group work From the above discussion it has been understand that need to acquire some strategies that enhance the effectiveness for group work. Following will be the best strategies for building team work in an ongoing project as well as attaining future success. Emphasizing the importance of teamwork In order to build effective teamwork, team leader of the group has to provide information about the selected task that is set out (Archard, 2013). Leader of the team has to be providing clear idea about that particular assignment to other member of the group (Nograek, 2011). Apart from that, member of the team has to be reported or submitted their survey report daily to the team leader. The Tragedy of the Common Man free essay sample

The Tragedy of the Common Man: An Introspective into Mind of Arthur Miller â€Å"The plays we revere, century after century, are the tragedies. In them, and in them alone, lies the belief – optimistic, if you will – in the perfectibility of man. It is time I think, that we who are without kings, took up this bright thread of our history and followed it to the only place it can possibly lead in our time – the heart and spirit of the average man† Arthur Miller In the above quote, Arthur Miller suggests that the dramatic human tragedies we have so revered over the past centuries should make way for a more mundane morality tale based on the common man, relevant to the lives of a mid 20th century American audience. Miller enforces this idea in his 1949 play, â€Å"Death of a Salesman† where a long-in-the-tooth traveling salesman is stuck walking a thin line between his fading dreams and his aging reality. It was Shakespeare who first showed us the power of tragedies through his influential works of human drama. Shakespeare’s â€Å"King Lear† is a great example of how history has revered the tragedies which exemplify human power, success, celebrity and hubris. However, contrary to Shakespeare, Arthur Miller’s play â€Å"Death of a Salesman† shows us that the tale of the common man in a modern world is as gripping as any. By portraying the protagonist as the average audience member, Miller supersedes any notion of fiction, with the thought of non-fiction or reality. As a result, Miller accentuates the drama within the play and thus draws more emotion from the audience. These are some of the ways Miller disassociates his tragedy from more stereotypical Shakespearean tragedies. Throughout Arthur Miller’s â€Å"Death of a Salesman†, there are key points where the main character, Willy Loman, speaks of high fortunes to come. For instance, during the first act Willy tells his two sons†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Someday I’ll have my own business, and I’ll never have to leave home again† (1249). During this scene, Willy’s prognosticated betterments occur during a flash back to when his boys were younger and when Willy was relatively successful. Willy’s flash back is a result of the preceding qualm he had with his wife, Linda, about the struggles of traveling at his older age and the predicament of his apathetic adult son living at home. Miller cleverly builds the plot by using common domestic dilemmas like Willy’s qualm to establish empathy from his audience. Miller realizes that when life becomes bleak, people tend to search for a time when life wasn’t so bleak or desolate. Because it is easy to relate to, Miller uses Willy’s frustration as a cause for his flash back. However, being able to relate to a common problem isn’t the prime reason behind Miller’s â€Å"Tragedy and the Common Man†. Being able to recognize the strength and resilience of the human spirit can also be enough to capture the heart and soul of the common man. In â€Å"Death of a Salesman†, Willy’s spirit and heart are put on display to show the immense amount of good and optimism that can arise while faced with adversities. Sometimes just the hope of affluence can change a man’s mood. Miller took this thought and applied it to Willy Loman’s character. Even though Willy didn’t entirely realize that his best days were behind him, he still found hope for the future by looking towards his sons. Because to Willy, his sons are a beacon of success and the greatest legacy the common man can leave is his offspring. Like many fathers and career men, Willy took his work home with him. As a father, Willy tried to instill in his boys that appearance and presentation is everything. Willy wanted nothing more than for his boys to become successful salesmen, just as Willy wanted for himself. Miller also recognizes that this belief is common among parents. For sons and daughters to grow up to be just like or even better than their fathers and mothers, I only can assume is a very proud and satisfying feeling. But unlike Willy in â€Å"Death of a Salesman†, this belief is usually seen as naive or wishful thinking among parents. However, Willy wanted so badly to be loved and revered that when he realized that he wasn’t, he put all of his expectations on his sons. Herein lays the tragedy within the play. Willy becomes so consumed in his fantasies of success that he loses sight of reality. Willy wont accept that his son Biff (the not so prodigal son) isn’t cut out for being a salesman or any businessman for that matter. When Biff tells his father this, Willy refuses to believe that the son who was once full of potential, is now an incompetent drifter. This is where Miller’s tragedy of the common man unfolds in his play. â€Å"I am not a leader of men, Willy, and neither are you†¦I am one dollar an hour, Willy! I tried seven states and couldn’t raise it. A buck an hour! Do you gather my meaning! I’m not bringing home any prizes any more, and you’re going to stop waiting for me to bring them home! -Biff Another way Miller differentiates his â€Å"tragedy of the common man† from other more aristocratic tragedies, is through the subtle details hidden within the play’s context. Throughout Miller’s play we see small allusions that reference the life-style of the common man. In the second act Willy says, â€Å"Whoever heard of a Hastings refrigerator? Once in my life I would like to own something outright before it’s broken! I just finished paying for the car and it’s on its last legs† (1269). Many people can relate to this statement by Willy. One time or another somebody has owned an appliance or car that broke down unceremoniously. In the beginning of act one, Miller also references the popular American car Chevrolet, because it was once Willy’s pride and joy. These references distinguish the â€Å"common man tragedy† compared to the more stereotypical tragedy that centers more around a celebrity figure. When the highest expectations aren’t met, tragedies arise. Miller saw this as the pinnacle of drama within the common man. Expectations in sports, school, relationships and work are all put on children as they grow up. These expectations can all be found within any man, not just the priviledged such as in Shakespeares plays. Willy Loman was not a famous person nor was he rich, society doesn’t place high expectations upon people like Willy. Rather, society places those expectations upon the rich and the famous, therefore the high drama in literary tragedies should revolve around the stories of the rich and famous. However, Arthur Miller disagrees with that model by saying the common man experiences are even more dramatic and tragic because of their relevance to ones own life. Miller’s â€Å"Death of a Salesman† proves that the revered dramatic tragedies of our time don’t have to revolve around societys royal and privileged characters. Miller proposes in his quote that it is time that we pay attention to the average man’s tragedy, because in doing so, we will learn more about ourselves.

Pain was just one of the many complaints but it was a significant and widespread one. The words of Gillaspie (2010) conveyed the depth of the problem: â€Å"The delivery of effective pain management has become a pressing national issue in healthcare†. Patients had a right to be managed for pain relief (Zalon, 2008). The problem of pain management has thereby been identified by me as my practic e problem. The nursing profession has several theories by which the problems in patient care were managed. Similarly I would be employing a theory to execute effective pain management in my hospital. The theory would be logical for application and concurrent with observations made daily. It would be similar to those previously used in successful programs. Past research would have supported this theory (Croyle, 2005). It would contain the highlights of the nursing profession. Foundations for nursing practice would be made. Generation of better knowledge would be remembered. The direction into which the nursing profession was to develop would be indicated. Patient care would be made better, professional growth would be enhanced, interpersonal communications among the nurses would be motivated for improvement, and guidance would evolve for education and research. The multidisciplinary approach to health care would be targeted. Criteria which improved the quality of care would continuou sly be identified. Middle-range theories promoted nursing practice by helping to understand the behavior of the client, suggesting useful interventions and offering credible explanations for the efficacy of the interventions (Peterson and Bedrow, 2008). The practice theory could be built up from the critical reflection of experiences. The purpose of the paper is to identify a middle range theory for my selected practice problem of management of pain and then use a borrowed theory to manage the same symptom of pain. Rationale for selection The commonest reason for patients seeking help from nurses was pain. The unpleasant sensation could cause the patient to even lose consciousness. The overwhelming effect could produce long-term adversities (Peterson and Bedrow, 2008). Wound healing became delayed and the immune system lost its activity. Metastasis of tumor cells could also occur. Acute pain was noticed in wounds or injuries, following surgery, in labor and in sickle cell crisis. Ch ronic pain was evident in skeletal muscle illnesses and gastrointestinal conditions. Hospital procedures like lumbar puncture, venipuncture and removal of chest tubes were accompanied by pain (Peterson and Bedrow). Infants suffered from pain in critically ill conditions or when close to death.
